Typical wagashi is made with sweeteners extracted from plants and natural ingredients such as mochi (Japanese rice cake), azuki bean paste, and fruits. Wagashi are exquisite in their beauty and taste, and are often served with tea at ceremonies or festivals.
The creation of wagashi began to flourish in the Edo Period (1603-1868) and remain an important part of Japanese food culture today.
